FOUNDER

Hi there! My name's Marguerite Madden, Founder of TriThrift.

My journey with endurance sports started in 2014 after running my first 5k. After that, the dominos fell and I've been an avid member of the world of endurance sports ever since.

It wasn't until I registered for my first triathlon in 2020 that I realized how many barriers to the sport there were and how those barriers were keeping more people from participating.

Whether the barriers are related to cost, accessibility, self-doubt, or all the above, my mission is to help reduce them as much as possible to help you, and others, tri.

Marguerite currently resides in the DMV area. She's been a K-12 special education teacher since graduating college in 2018. You can find her in the closest thrift store shopping for treasures when she's not runnning.

I tri because I get to, not have to. After participating in my first endurance race, I soon realized the powerful link between getting to voluntarily do hard things and the self-discovery experienced in the process. When we get to choose what hard things we "tri" in life, and prove to ourselves we can do them, we become much more prepared when the inevitable hard things we have to do in life show up.

Why Do I Tri?

I tri because I enjoy the routine of training, the challenge of pushing myself to reach new goals, the continuous learning that comes with each season, and the joy of training with my fellow club members!

Why Do I Tri?

I tri because I had the world’s best feeling of accomplishment when I crossed the finish line of my first triathlon. I’ve been chasing those endorphins since!

I continue to tri because it keeps me active, gives me quality time with my friends and I love seeing the look on people’s faces when I casually drop into conversation that I’m a triathlete.

Why Do I Tri?

I tri because I love a challenge. I tri because I love the community. I tri because I love competing, even if it’s only against myself.

Why Do I Tri?

Why I "tri" has looked different throughout my life and the journey I am currently on, but what has remained steady is my belief that my health and well-being are intrinsically linked to moving my body with purpose. I "tri" because I know I can do hard things and I believe that when I "tri" I gain so much more than the physical benefits, and when we "tri" together, we all win.

Why Do I Tri?

I “tri” because it shows and encourages others that hard things can be done and breaking barriers is possible. I “tri” also because while I am doing physical activity and endurance training, I “forget” I have a disability, I forget I have limitations not everyone experiences, and I just GO!

Why Do I Tri?

While Pamela does not actually participate in triathlons, she is an avid runner and is passionate about Trithrift and the benefits of endurance sports. Pamela began running during the COVID-19 pandemic, quickly progressing from 5ks to Marathons. She moved to Frederick County, MD in 2022, and her favorite place to run is on the C&O canal path along the Potomac River. Now a mom, Pamela enjoys taking her toddler out for runs in the jogging stroller and is currently training for a fall half marathon. She hopes to one day run an ultra. Pamela runs for her mental health and to illustrate a healthy lifestyle for her daughter. She wants her daughter to feel empowered, and capable of "running" the world.

Why Do I Tri?

I tri because it reminds me what it feels like to begin… and again… and again again.

There is something humbling about starting over. About standing at the edge of the water, not fully sure, about getting on the bike and finding your rhythm again, about running when your body is asking you to stop. Triathlon meets you exactly where you are and then gently, and sometimes not so gently, asks you to grow.

I tri because it has taught and is teaching me resilience in real time. It has shown me that progress does not always look like winning. Sometimes it looks like finishing. Sometimes it looks like showing up when it would be easier not to.

I tri because I believe this sport should belong to more people. Not just the fastest. Not just the most experienced. But the beginners, the returners, the ones figuring it out as they go. And that look on someone's face when they cross a finish line for the first time, the one that says, "I cannot believe I just did that," it gets me every time. It reminds me why access matters and why this sport does not belong to a certain body type or a certain income level. It belongs to anyone willing to try.

And if sharing my journey, my voice, and my work helps even one person feel like they can start, then that is more than enough reason for me to keep going and to keep tri’ing!
